During 2 Hour Legal Hotline, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Every First Tuesday of the Month

Finding answers to questions about the law or a legal situation can be difficult, but on every first Tuesday of the month, obtaining good, simple legal advice will be easy--just call 472-8303 for LegalLine, the free legal advice hotline that answers legal questions over the telephone. Phones are answered between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Lawyer Referral Service of Central Texas, LegalLine is staffed by attorney volunteers who answer legal questions and give brief legal advice. Questions concerning many areas of the law--including family law, criminal matters, traffic problems, consumer issues, landlord/tenant issues, employment law, personal injury--can be answered by calling LegalLine at 472-8303. All calls are confidential and anonymous. Bilingual (English/Spanish) attorneys will be available.

What you need to know about LegalLine

1. What types of questions do you answer?
General legal questions dealing with most areas of the law including divorce and family law matters, consumer issues, auto accidents, criminal matters, bankruptcy issues, real estate, and business law issues. If there is no attorney available to answer your particular question, we will find someone to return your call.

2. Who will I be talking to?
You will talk to an attorney volunteer licensed in the State of Texas.

3. If I like the attorney I talk to, can I retain him or her?
No. This is a short, anonymous call that is intended to provide you general advice and assistance. If you would like to hire an attorney, you may call the Lawyer Referral Service of Central Texas during normal business hours by calling 472-8303 or
www.AustinLRS.com for an Internet referral.

4. Can I call more than once?
While we do not restrict the number of times a person may call LegalLine, we ask that you do not make multiple calls during the same month/session.

5. Will the attorney be able to answer my question?
The attorney will do his or her best to either answer your question or point you in the direction you need to go to get an answer (e.g., retain an attorney or give you the number of an agency that may help). Legal issues come in all shapes and sizes and LegalLine is only intended to provide assistance to common or general legal questions. If your matter concerns complex matters or facts, you will need to retain an attorney.

6. How much does it cost to call?
LegalLine is a free community service program.

7. How long do calls last?
Volunteer attorneys keep the calls as short as possible so that LegalLine can help as many people as possible. However, the length of calls varies depending on complexity.

If you cannot get through due to high call volume, please be patient. You might hang up and call later in the evening. If you end up in the voicemail system, we will try to have a lawyer call you back that evening.

8. Can I pay to talk with the attorney for a longer period of time?
No. If you require further assistance, you may wish to call the Lawyer Referral service the next business day.

9. Who can call Austin LegalLine?
Austin LegalLine is designed for Austin and the surrounding communities.

10: How can attorneys volunteer?
Attorneys can volunteer for LegalLine by sending an e-mail to the Lawyer Referral Service.
